What Are The Disadvantages Of Buying Organic Foods

Are you interested in making the switch to organic foods? If you are, you may want to first verify that you are making the right decision. You likely already know the many benefits to eating organic foods, as these benefits are often prominently displayed and advertised. With that being said, we rarely hear the disadvantages to eating organic foods.

One of the few disadvantages to eating organic foods is the cost. Do you know how much most organic foods costs? If not, you may first want to examine those costs before you make the decision to switch to organic foods. There is nothing worse than being blindsided or surprised with the cost of organic foods. After a close look, you will see that organic foods do cost a little bit more money, but that increase in cost can add up overtime.

Although the cost of organic food may turn you and other hopeful eaters away, it is also important to know that there are multiple ways in which you can go about saving money. For example, you can search for organic food sales at your local natural food stores or supermarkets. You stock up when you see those sales or choose to shop at a store that is know for their everyday low prices on organic foods. Organic food coupons can also be used. These coupons can be found online, with a standard internet search, in many stores, as well as in weekend newspapers.

In addition to costs, another disadvantage to eating organically is the limited selection of products that some individuals are faced with. Luckily, not everyone is faced with this organic food eating disadvantage. Often times, those who live in small cities and towns find it the hardest to buy organic foods. With that being said, it doesnt matter whether you live in a small town or a huge city, there are still a number of different ways that you can go about buying organic foods.

A great way to buy organic foods if you live in a small town is by going directly to the source, organic farmers. This is great way to get your organic fruits and vegetables, as many small towns now have organic farmers. You can also search for specialty organic food stores by using online business directories, your local phone book, or by asking those that you know for recommendations. The internet can also be used to shop online.

As previously stated, you can shop online to buy organic foods, but it is also important to know that there are a number of cons or downsides to doing so. This is mostly due in part to the requirements of shopping online. For example, a computer and internet connection is required to shop online. Many online shoppers also need to pay for shipping costs. Speaking of payments, most online food stores only accept credit or specific debit cards, namely those that can be processed as credit cards.

Although there are a number of disadvantages to eating organic foods, it is also important to remember the benefits or advantages to doing so as well. For starters, organic foods are all natural and safe to eat. There is no having to worry about potentially harmful chemicals, additives, and pesticides. Organic foods are also helping the environment and the economy.

The Healthy Kitchen Must Have A Food Dehydrator As An Essential Tool

Food dehydrators are staple in the healthy kitchen. Health-minded people are now bringing home top model food dehydrators from dieters trying to conserve calories to food purists who would like to enjoy delicious foods that are not riddled with preservatives and added unnatural chemicals.

You know fresh produce is great for your body since they are packed with natural vitamins, minerals, as well as enzymes. Sorry to say, a lot of fresh produce goes to waste because people simply do not eat it up before it goes bad.

Food dehydrators are the solution to this dilemma, you will never again waste money by throwing out rotten fruit! You can use your dehydrator to eliminate the moisture from these foods so they are preserved naturally.

Dehydrated foods will last much longer than those that are left fresh and they can be used in a variety of healthy snacks. Contemplate adding dehydrated fruit pieces to yogurt or mixed in with nuts for a homemade trail mix.

Even children will eat foods that have been prepared through food dehydrators. They will eat their fruits gladly without even realizing they are so good for them. You may even be able to dehydrate very small pieces of vegetables and slip them into a dehydrated fruit mix for those veggie-hating family members.

You need to make certain there is just enough heat to dry the food, but not so much that it bakes it when you are getting your food dehydrated. There is a fine line between drying something and cooking it, so you will want to make sure that it works; you also want to make certain that half your food does not get dried out while the other half just turns into mush.

Food dehydration involves taking anything that is thin slices of the food to be used, and placing it in a dry environment that is warm enough to keep bacteria from growing, but not so warm as to cook the food. It is also crucial that the moisture coming off the food surface has somewhere to go.

Even with the door of an oven slightly partly open – you generally cannot simply use your oven for food dehydration,, it is difficult for the food to dry correctly. Not to point out the fact that dehydrating food is sometimes a lengthy process, and you most likely do not want to tie up your oven for so long. In fact, occasionally dehydrating a batch of fruit can take 20 hours or more.

Benefits to you as well as your family are obvious. Rather than always snacking on processed and possibly unhealthy foods, you can eat the jerky or try fruits and vegetables that you prepared yourself. Using dehydrated veggies by adding them to your soups and stews can be a great way to improve the number of vitamin-rich foods in your diet.

Cottage Food Laws Making Profits From Your Kitchen

If you search for a baking forum, several will pop up showcasing discussions about women worldwide using their home-based kitchens to bake cakes, cookies, pies, cupcakes, breads and more, all in an effort to make extra income and show-off their culinary talents. In 2002, Warren Brown, moonlighted as a cake baker, eventually leaving his job as a Washington DC lawyer to take his deliciously amazing cakes to the masses two bakeries. Today Brown has seven locations across Maryland, Virginia and the nations capitol.

Everyone knows someone who can create a delicious cake or pie; In fact, if you stroll through any community farmer’s market you will see folks selling their homemade baked goods, apple butter or heirloom candy? The ability to sell a food specialty is made possible in most United States (U.S.) communities by the existence of “cottage food laws;” a special law giving home food processors permission to make potentially non hazardous food products from the home kitchen. In the U.S., cottage food laws are different for every state so home food processor’s must check with their individual state regulatory agency to learn about specific food processing rules and food labeling requirements; while all other states may require the use of a licensed commercial kitchen.

Today eleven states currently have house bills pending, and the residents are hopeful these cottage food laws will pass bringing that much needed shot in the arm to their local economies. There is really no way of knowing how many home-based bakers and small food processors there are across America, however one thing is for certain, today the consumers desire for homemade, clean label foods with no preservatives opens the door for all food entrepreneurs ready and willing to become essential commodities in their community.

Clever Ways To Substitute Satisfying, Healthy Food For Acne-causing Junk

Our last article explained the likely connection between poor diet choices and acne. However, merely knowing that junk food plays a role may not be enough. Changing one’s diet is one of the most difficult adjustments to make. It requires tremendous discipline during the early stages and the sacrifice of long-time comforts. Often, the best way to start eating a healthier diet is to transition into it. That is, substituting healthy foods that satisfy you in a similar way to the junk you hope to stop eating. This helps your body do its job in two ways: by giving it a break from filtering out junk, and by giving it the vital nutrients it is desperately lacking. Here are four unhealthy foods many clear skin seekers consume too much of, along with suggestions on healthy things to substitute.

Junk Food #1: Potato chips, pretzels, Doritos, or popcorn

Why You’re Hooked: The addiction to potato chips boils down to a few things. Many are satisfied by the crunchiness and texture of the chips themselves. Something about the way the chips feel in your mouth just makes you think of them when you are hungry or bored. Other people really do just like the taste; let’s be honest, there are a lot of great-tasting potato chips out there, and I have yet to meet the person who did not enjoy a handful of Smartfood. And all of these are fine in moderation. However, many people with acne are binge-eating these foods and their diet is suffering from it.

What To Substitute: One great substitute for these foods is baby carrots dipped in a sweet, tangy balsamic vinagrette. The carrots provide the crunch, and the balsamic vinagrette offers the tang. As an added benefit, carrots are positively loaded with essential nutrients like Vitamin A and beta-carrotine. You will also be happy to discover that you will not feel sick or bloated after eating them.

Junk Food #2: Oreo cookies, Chips Ahoy, any kind of chocolate bar or sugary snack

Why You’re Hooked: Cookies and sugary snacks satisfy our “sweet tooth” which is stronger in some people than others. Not everyone who binges on potato chips, for example, has to worry about binging on cookies, although many do binge on both. In either case, it can be very hard to kick the habit of eating too many sugary snacks. They are a form of “comfort food” that appeals to us more and more as we become stressed or anxious. Unfortunately, they offer no nutritional value and contain many unhealthy ingredients.

What To Substitute: Luckily for you, there is a natural substitute that will give you all the healthy sugar you need: grapes! Besides being cold and somewhat crunchy, grapes actually satisfy much the “sweet tooth” craving that you currently satisfy with cookies and candy bars. If you can get over the initial cravings for junk food and just try to eat grapes instead, you will find yourself quite satisfied and full after eating them -and your body will appreciate the fiber!

Junk Food #3: Frozen pizza (or most delivered pizza)

Why You’re Hooked: Pizza may be one of the most universally liked foods on Earth. Few can resist the mouth-watering cheeses, sauce, spices and toppings that a delicious slice of pizza has to offer. Nor should you, in all cases. Pizza is truly one of life’s joys, and you should enjoy it in moderation. The problem is that many people turn to cheap, mass-produced frozen pizza which contains preservatives and various ingredients your body despises. Ditto for most delivered pizza like Dominoes.

What To Substitute: The best substitute for frozen pizza is to prepare your own home-made pizza using fresh, delicious ingredients. You can actually buy your own dough, sauce, cheese, spices, and toppings that are not frozen and have not been sitting on shelves for months. Prepared this way, pizza can actually be quite healthy and much better-tasting! For convenience’s sake, you can even make multiple pizzas at a time, eating some and storing the rest so you can eat it later, just as conveniently as your frozen pizza of old.

Junk Food #4: Pop-Tarts, toaster strudles, doughnuts, or other sugary breakfast foods

Why You’re Hooked: When you wake up in the morning, your body literally feels as though it just went through a famine. It has not eaten in 8 hours. This is why sugary foods are so appealing and appear to give you a great energy boost after you eat them. Unfortunately, the energy boost is short-lived, followed by a crash, and just increases the amount of junk your body has to filter out. As we’ve discussed, this junk often manifests in the form of acne or other health problems.

What To Substitute: You do not have to completely sacrifice sweet-tasting breakfast foods. You just need to eat healthy ones. For example, visit the natural foods section of your local grocery store until you find fiber-packed Raisin Bran or Cranberry Crunch cereal. Believe it or not, these healthy cereals are actually delicious and will leave you feeling completely full as you walk out the door. Bananas and apples are another excellent morning food, delivering a surge of fiber and potassium that none of the aforementioned junk can provide.

Different Types Of Soups

The two general classes of soup already mentioned permit of numerous methods of classification. For instance, soups are sometimes named from the principal ingredient or an imitation of it, as the names potato soup, beef soup, macaroni soup, mock-turtle soup testify. Again, both stimulating and nutritious soups may be divided into thin and thick soups, thin soups usually being clear, and thick soups, because of their nature, cloudy. When the quality of soups is considered, they are placed in still different classes and are called broth, bisque, consomme, puree, and so on. Another important classification of soups results from the nationality of the people who use them. While soups are classified in other ways, it will be sufficient for all practical purposes if the housewife understands these three principal classes.

CLASSES DENOTING CONSISTENCY.–As has already been pointed out, soups are of only two kinds when their consistency is thought of, namely, clear soups and thick soups.

CLEAR SOUPS are those made from carefully cleared stock, or soup foundation, and flavored or garnished with a material from which the soup usually takes its name. There are not many soups of this kind, bouillon and consomme being the two leading varieties, but in order to be palatable, they require considerable care in making.

THICK SOUPS are also made from stock, but milk, cream, water, or any mixture of these may also be used as a basis, and to it may be added for thickening meat, fish, vegetables, eggs, or grain or some other starchy material. Soups of this kind are often made too thick, and as such soups are not appetizing, care must be taken to have them just right in consistency.

CLASSES DENOTING QUALITY.–When attention is given to the quality of soup, this food divides itself into several varieties, namely, broth, cream soup, bisque, chowder, and puree.

BROTHS have for their foundation a clear stock. They are sometimes a thin soup, but other times they are made quite thick with vegetables, rice, barley, or other material, when they are served as a substantial part of a meal.

CREAM SOUPS are highly nutritious and are of great variety. They have for their foundation a thin cream sauce, but to this are always added vegetables, meat, fish, or grains.

BISQUES are thick, rich soups made from game, fish, or shell fish, particularly crabs, shrimp, etc. Occasionally, vegetables are used in soup of this kind.

CHOWDERS are soups that have sea food for their basis. Vegetables and crackers are generally added for thickening and to impart flavor.

PUREES are soups made thick partly or entirely by the addition of some material obtained by boiling an article of food and then straining it to form a pulp. When vegetables containing starch, such as beans, peas, lentils, and potatoes, are used for this purpose, it is unnecessary to thicken the soup with any additional starch; but when meat, fish, or watery vegetables are used, other thickening is required. To be right, a puree should be nearly as smooth as thick cream and of the same consistency.

CLASSES TYPICAL OF PARTICULAR COUNTRIES.–Certain kinds of soup have been made so universally by the people of various countries that they have come to be regarded as national dishes and are always thought of as typical of the particular people by whom they are used. Among the best known of these soups are Borsch, a soup much used by the Russian people and made from beets, leeks, and sour cream; Daikan, a Japanese soup in which radishes are the principal ingredient; Kouskous, a soup favored by the people of Abyssinia and made from vegetables; Krishara, a rice soup that finds much favor in India; Lebaba, an Egyptian soup whose chief ingredients are honey, butter, and raisin water; Minestra, an Italian soup in which vegetables are combined; Mulligatawny, an Indian rice soup that is flavored with curry; Potroka, another kind of Russian soup, having giblets for its foundation; Soljinka, an entirely different variety of Russian soup, being made from fish and onions; and Tarhonya, a Hungarian soup containing noodles.
